During this 2020-2021 academic year, Erdai Art Hall has cooperated with the ninth grade art class at Peng Hu Makung Junior High School to conduct a one-year plan, the “Arts and Aesthetic Deep Plowing Project.” With the theme of “curator of life,” the curriculum of life history and the role of a curator has been designed to instruct students on both technical subjects and practical experience in the industry.
The management of a museum/fine arts museum is largely unknown or understood by local students. Although Makung Junior High School is located near many cultural and educational facilities, including Penghu Living Museum, Penghu Marine Geopark Center, Confucius Temple, Ocean Resource Museum, Penghu Fossil Museum, and Erdai Art Hall, these facilities are seemingly considered as options for outdoor education.
Therefore, Erdai Art Hall has cooperated with the grade 9 art class of Peng Hu Makung Junior High School in order to actively integrate social and compulsory education. After providing students with curatorial courses as guidance, an experimental plan for joint exhibition would be conducted at the end of the semester. All pieces of artworks have been classified by the staff of Erdai Art Hall into seven categories: pavilion, painting from life, car and street lights, symmetrical trees, landscape, portrait, and Nanfang’ao, and then students can select some pieces of artworks for group work to name them with an interpretation.

“Reading a Painting” is a title that refers to art creation and essays from Erdai’s book, Paintings and Words, published in 1979. In the article, “Searching for One’s Own,” he stated, “I know little about the theory of art and painting, and I cannot argue with others based on classical theory. I can only express my feelings based on my personal experience. As for artworks, I cannot recite famous paintings and painters of ancient and modern times; I can only appreciate the pieces that I think are good. About technique, I cannot explain the terms and legal methods; I can only use simple tools and whatever I can get to create a painting or a sculpture. I never believed that I needed to carefully select a tool when painting.” He also said, “When viewing an artwork, I think it is necessary to notice its composition, lines, and colors, but noticing its atmosphere is more important.”

Speak in Adolescence

The right to speak in a museum/fine arts museum is usually controlled by the museum staff, experts, and scholars. Professional interpretation enables the audience to understand the stories behind the exhibits and the source of the collection and enhance their appreciation of art. However, when the context is detached and the audiences add their subjective self-consciousness to appreciate an artwork, they can have their own right to speak; therefore, a “new” meaning is provided by the audience.
In an open society, the expression of the right to speak is diverse. A museum/fine arts museum should also provide an open platform for the public to have dialogue.
The term, “say it nicely,” which is frequently used today, not only refers to “say the words nicely and clearly,” but it also means “do not talk nonsense” and “speak better.” This exhibition, “Reading a Painting,” is expected to be able to narrow the gap between the audience and the artworks in a humorous way.
